Premier League: City chokes its way to victory, Arsenal disastrous

Defending champions Manchester City have kept their nerve in the head-to-head race for the English championship and celebrated an important victory. Pep Guardiola’s team celebrated a painstaking 1-0 (0-0) victory at FC Burnley on Sunday afternoon, regaining Liverpool’s lead of the standings.

Sergio Aguero (63) scored the saving goal for the Citizens, while the Argentinian scored the 20th goal of the season in the Premier League. The German international players Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gündogan were in the starting eleven at City, Sane was replaced in the 64th minute.

On Friday, Liverpool opened the 36th matchday with a 5:0 (3:0) against Huddersfield Town at the bottom of the table. In the table the team of team manager Jürgen Klopp is one point behind the champion with 91 points.

The Reds, who are hoping for their first championship in 29 years, will be challenged in the last two games at Newcastle United and against the strong upwardly mobile Wolverhampton Wanderers, while the Sky Blues will play against Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

FC Arsenal has once again made a big mistake in the fight for a place in the Champions League. Without the Rio World Champion Mesut Özil, who was injured at the foot, the Londoners conceded their third bitter bankruptcy in a row with the deserved 0:3 (0:0) at Leicester City.

Youri Tielemans scored by head to the lead (59th), a little later the Belgian shot at the post (72nd). Jamie Vardy made everything clear with his seasonal sonatas number 17 and 18 (86./90.+4). The strong goalkeeper Bernd Leno prevented a higher defeat of the indisposed Gunners, who played after the yellow-red card against Ainsley Maitland-Niles (36th, repeated foul play) in outnumber.

Arsenal, who defended former international Shkodran Mustafi, was again able to rely on striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (nose operation). But the former Dortmunder was not a factor. Already in the first half Leicester had 5:1 shots on goal, after the break it remained a one-sided encounter. The logical consequence was the first defeat for Arsenal in a midday match.

In the battle for the king’s class, the cannoneers are now dependent on shooter assistance. Arsenal will play against Brighton and Burnley in the final sprint of the season.
