Riots and Corona: Visiting fans excluded in Belgium

Measure applies until the end of December

Following riots by some football supporters, no more visiting fans are to be allowed at Belgian Pro League matches for the time being.

The board of directors has decided that from next matchday until the end of December, supporters of visiting teams will no longer be allowed into the stadiums at all Pro League matches, the Pro League announced on Monday. The circulation of the corona virus can be contained by temporarily stopping the bus journeys of the visiting fans.

On Sunday, the two matches between Beershot VA and Royal Antwerp and Standard Liège and Charleroi were marred by rioting and pyrotechnics. The incidents are deplorable, unacceptable and show criminal behaviour, said the Pro League.

However, the league stressed that the “vast majority” of fans had responded in solidarity to its call and that of the clubs to comply with the Corona rules and to wear masks, and thanked these supporters.
