Late 1-1 and a bad injury: The Premier League duel between Everton FC and Tottenham Hotspur came to a dramatic end on Sunday evening after 60 weak minutes. An individual mistake opened the match 1-0 for Spurs, before Tosun could equalise in injury time. Everton’s Gomes could only be carried off the field after minutes of injury to the right foot.

Everton coach Marco Silva switched to two positions compared to the 2-3 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion: For Keane (on the bench) and Bernard (knee injury) Mina and Delph started.
His opponent Mauricio Pochettino changed his starting eleven in three places after the 2-1 defeat in Liverpool: For Rose (Gelbsperre), Winks (auf der Bank) and Kane (Krankheit) Davies, Ndombelé and Lucas Moura started.
From the outset, the game was marked by the uncertainty of both teams, who visibly carried around their latest negative runs (Everton: five defeats from six games; Tottenham: one win from five games). Although there were always good opportunities for attacks, the two teams were barely close to the opponents’ penalty area when the precision went to the flutes, so it took until the 33rd minute for the spectators to see the first shot on goal: Richarlison was operated centrally in Digne’s penalty area, took the ball with his chest and finished the turn. The ball came flat and central to the goal, Gazzaniga had no difficulties.
Another shot from the Brazilian just before the break marked the second – and last – scoring opportunity before the change of sides. Defensively, both sides were largely secure, although there was little for the back ranks to do in the first 45 minutes. No goal was scored in the cabins.
Iwobi introduces Tottenham’s lead
The second half also took a long time until he saw his first highlight: Digne played the ball from the left flat into the penalty area, actually exactly to defender Sanchez. But he missed the ball somehow, so that Richarlison had a free shot at the penalty spot. Gazzaniga reacted brilliantly and parried the shot (61st). Son had previously been denied a penalty shot after Mina’s alleged foul, even after being checked by the video assistant (51st). Iwobi’s mistake was a big one, and after just over an hour it was the first chance for the Spurs to score – and at the same time their lead: the Nigerian played the ball right to Son, who was the direct operator of the starting allies. He passed the ball by a defender at the edge of the penalty area and scored against the direction of Pickford (63rd).
The game picked up speed, Davies almost steered a Walcott flank into his own goal (68th). Shortly thereafter, the focus was again on the video assistant: Alli was in a header duel in his own penalty area with his arm above his head. After several minutes of checking the pictures, the game continued – without a penalty shot.
A scene followed, which most of those present will probably not forget for a long time: Son brought Gomes down in the run by sliding, the Portuguese fell, crashed against Aurier and remained on the grass (79.). It was immediately clear that something bad had happened. Gomes was surrounded by paramedics in a very short time, the shock was written in the faces of the surrounding players. Son had to leave the court with tears of smooth red. The game was interrupted for minutes before Gomes could be carried off the field. The midfielder had suffered a serious injury to his right leg. All the players were visibly off track. As the club later announced, Gomes suffered an ankle fracture and will undergo surgery on Monday.
The official remaining time was five minutes – and twelve minutes injury time. And in this time Everton seemed to notice his superiority. The home side managed to put their thoughts of Gomes to one side at least for the time being – and after 97 minutes they still managed to get a well-deserved equaliser: After a strong side-shift, Digne led the ball straight into the penalty area, where Tosun screwed himself up and headed the ball in from close range. The home side were able to keep at least one point, but this was overshadowed by their midfielder’s serious injury.
