Bundesliga: Ten Freiburgers stop series of bankruptcies

With a secure class position behind them, SC Freiburg have stopped their series of bankruptcies in spite of a long time inferior in number – but have been waiting for a victory for seven games. After four defeats in a row, ten Breisgauer won 1:1 (1:1) against Fortuna Düsseldorf on the third last matchday of the Bundesliga.

Vincenzo Grifo scored with a penalty kick (9th) for Freiburg. Dawid Kownacki (31.) was successful for Düsseldorf. Jannik Haberer saw the yellow-red card in the 47th minute because of repeated fouls. The league position of the sports club, which celebrated its only Bundesliga victory against Düsseldorf more than six years ago, was already decided before the match due to the defeat of VfB Stuttgart on Saturday at Hertha BSC (1:3).

The 24,000 spectators in the sold-out Schwarzwaldstadion already saw the first dicey scenes in the SC penalty area in the fourth minute. First goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow had a hard time with a free kick from Kevin Stöger, then the keeper flew past the ball at the following corner.

Shortly afterwards it became turbulent on the other side. Referee Tobias Welz (Wiesbaden) recognized after a duel between Benito Raman and Grifo on penalty kick for the hosts. The foul didn’t ask twice – and seconds later even had the chance to score the second goal.

Afterwards, both teams took it easy. Speed and intensity indicated that it was no longer about anything. Only in the 27th minute it was Grifo again who could not use a chance. All in all, the Düsseldorfers, who had to manage without Diego Contento, Jean Zimmer and Marcel Sobottka, did not take it too seriously when it came to securing against counterattacks. The last consequence on the defensive was missing.

Since the Freiburger, who had been severely weakened in terms of substitution and who lacked Luca Waldschmidt, Amir Abrashi, Manuel Gulde, Florian Kath, Tim Kleindienst, Philipp Lienhart and Lukas Kübler, acted in a similarly negligent manner, the compensation was not too great a surprise. The goal of Poland’s Kownacki, however, was extremely worth seeing. The 1:1 break was highly deserved for the Fortuna.

After the page change, emotions came into play. The controversial expulsion of Haberer from his seat caused a stir. It got a little rough in the meantime. The guests made use of their superior numbers and put the Freiburgers on the defensive. The second gate for the Fortuna was in the air after one hour. Rouwen Hennings (66.) awarded the best opportunity in this phase.
