Marcus Sorg was delighted about the 8-0 victory over Estonia in the European Championship qualifier. However, the interim national coach has stressed his role in the second row as co-coach behind Joachim Löw.
The wording of the press conference:
Question: “You have now been national coach for ten days and have celebrated two victories. How satisfied are you?”
Marcus Sorg (53, substitute national coach): “Of course, I’m very satisfied and a little proud of the team that concentrated and worked consistently after a strenuous season. The crew is spraying with energy. She tries to inspire people off the field. The task was to score six points. This task has been completed. We now have nine points. The national trainer can continue working from an optimal starting position.”
Question: “It worked even without Joachim Löw. Why is it still important that he returns?”
Sorg: “The national coach is the one who leads the way and to whom everyone orients and clings. He was missing. So everyone will be happy when he will soon be healthy again and be with us again.”
Question: “How relieved are you that you met the target?”
Sorg: “I’m already relieved. There was a certain pressure, even if they were not the strongest opponents. But I approached the tasks calmly because I had great confidence in the players.”
Question: “With six points and 10:0 goals, you will now go down in history as the most successful national coach.”
“No. I won’t go down in history. I’m not a national coach.”
Question: “Where do you see the team now?”
Sorg: “We are at the beginning of a development and there will still be one or the other trailer. However, the team holds together incredibly and tries to play exciting football. She is willing to put her foot down until the end and is ready to overcome resistance. Something’s growing together. Every victory helps a team in upheaval.”
Question: “What does this mean for further EM qualification?”
Sorg: “We want to take this upwind and this enthusiasm with us. We have so far presented ourselves sovereign. We want to continue to fulfil our tasks and not look left and right.”
Question: “It was Kai Havertz’s birthday. Why didn’t he come in?”
Sorg: “He is a fantastic player. It was not for nothing that he was elected player of the season. But the national team has a lot of fantastic players and a lot of competition. Kai will be an important part of the future of the national team.”
