This week the first winner of the Nations League will be determined. On Sunday, June 9th, the final will take place. Germany is no longer in the current competition because the DFB team failed in the group phase. Coach Joachim Löw’s team finished third behind the Netherlands and world champions France, which meant they were relegated from League A to League B. The team was also in the second half of the season.
Due to its relegation from the league, Germany will only start in league B at the next Nations League in autumn 2020. In addition to the DFB team, Poland, Austria, Iceland and Wales are also in the second highest league of the competition.
Due to the poor results, the DFB team also slipped into draw pot two in the draw for the European Championship qualification, which is why Germany was drawn in November last year for the group header Netherlands.
A total of 24 nations qualify for the 2022 European Championships, with first and second in ten groups qualifying for the tournament. The remaining four places will then be determined by playoffs. The Nations-League group winners of leagues A to D will each play out a winner who qualifies for the European Championship. If a group winner has already qualified, the next best team will move up.
Germany had to play their first match against the Netherlands. The DFB team won 3:2 against Oranje and thus made a big step towards qualifying for the European Championship. In the coming days, two more qualifying matches against Belarus and Estonia are waiting. Both games will be shown on free TV by private broadcaster RTL.
The first UEFA Nations League finals will be hosted by Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo’s team will face Switzerland in the semi-finals in Porto.
In the other semi-final, England and the Netherlands, who won in the German group, will face each other.
DAZN has secured the broadcasting rights to the first UEFA Nations League. The streaming service broadcasts both the semi-finals and the final live. In addition, DAZN shows the highlights of the games.
The final is also offered on free TV. However, ZDF only shows the final live and in full length. The two semi-final matches are exclusively on the DAZN programme.
