Five days after the Liverpool Champions League shock, FC Barcelona have won their last home game of the season. The Catalans also beat FC Getafe 2-0 (1-0) on the penultimate matchday at La Liga thanks to a goal from former Bundesliga pro Arturo Vidal (39).
The German national goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen sat on the bench. On Tuesday, Barcelona were eliminated 4-0 at FC Liverpool despite a 3-0 first leg win in the premier class semi-final.
Record champions Real Madrid added another painful chapter to their sobering season. Coach Zinedine Zidane’s team lost 3-1 (1-1) to ex-Frankfurter Jesus Vallejo at Real Sociedad San Sebastian after an early red card. For the Basques the former Dortmund Mikel Merino (26.) scored among others, Toni Kroos played through with the Madrilenians. In the table, Reals’ gap to arch-rivals Barcelona grew to 18 points.
In the fight for fourth place in the Champions League, FC Valencia took pole position before the final matchday. Valencia won their home game against Deportivo Alaves 3:1 (2:1) and jumped to fourth place, past their rivals Getafe. FC Sevilla, too, can look forward to a place in the premier league after a 1-1 (1-0) win at Atletico Madrid, sixth in the standings and two points behind Valencia.
