Series A struggles with “Sky Italia”

The Italian Serie A football clubs are insisting on payment of the sixth and final instalment from Sky Italia for the broadcasting of the matches.

As the paying broadcaster is demanding a price reduction or a postponement of the payment, the League announced the submission of a reminder. “The terms of the contract must be adhered to”, the letter to “Sky” states, which still has to pay around 220 million euros for the current season.

The paying broadcaster hopes that the league will be accommodating because the championship has been suspended since 9 March due to the Corona crisis. “Sky” had secured the TV broadcasting rights to Serie A for three years, the last installment is part of the 1.3 billion euros agreed upon for that purpose.

On Thursday, the Italian government headed by Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora will decide on a possible restart of Serie A. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had recently developed a hygiene and safety concept similar to that of the Bundesliga for the continuation of play.

According to media reports, the ball could roll again from 13 June or 20 June if the policy is approved.
