Criticism of Chelsea transfers: that’s what Havertz and Co. are missing

In order to close the huge gap to Liverpool and Manchester City, FC Chelsea took a deep hold in the transfer summer of 2020 and invested over 220 million euros in new stars. However, the English former national player Owen Hargreaves lacks an aspect in the selection of new players.

With the transfers of Hakim Ziyech (Ajax/EUR 40 million), Ben Chilwell (Leicester City/EUR 50.2 million), Timo Werner (RB Leipzig/EUR 53 million), Kai Havertz (Bayer Leverkusen/EUR 80 million), FC Chelsea set a strong exclamation mark. The fact that Routinier Thiago Silva (Paris Saint-Germain) and Malang Sarr (OGC Nice) also attracted two top stars on land free of charge underpins the attack on the top of the Premier League. Hargreaves doubts, however, that money alone is enough to reach for the title.

“As sports director, I would have committed all of these really good young players,” praises Hargreaves, but limits: “But I’m not sure who the leader in the team is.” The former midfielder, who played for FC Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Manchester City in his career, becomes even more concrete with his criticism: “[N ‘Golo] Kanté is a great player, but he is too quiet,” explains Hargreaves. The same applies to his central co-worker Matteo Kovacic.
