Europa League: Tragic: UEFA delegate dies in front of Apollon v Austria

A tragic incident occurred in the run-up to Vienna Austria’s Europa League qualifying match against Apollon Limassol.

A member of the UEFA delegation suffered a heart attack on Thursday afternoon at the hotel in Nicosia, where members of the Austria delegation are also accommodated. The 74-year-old died later in hospital, as Apollon of Austria announced.

The Englishman had travelled to Nicosia as the mentor of Spanish UEFA delegate Miguel Maria Garcia Caba. He collapsed in the hotel lobby.

Austria board member Markus Kraetschmer and tour guide Christoph Lehenbauer provided first aid. Despite rapid medical first aid from a doctor and the summoned paramedics, the British man died after being admitted to hospital.

The death had no effect on the evening game. Austria will be 1:2 down after the first leg in the second leg (start 19.00 CET).
