Farewell to the Europa League: Austria fails at Apollon

Europa League: Farewell to the Europa League: Austria fails at Apollon

For Wiener Austria, the European Cup season ended early on Thursday evening. Coach Christian Ilzer’s team lost the second leg of the 3rd qualifying round for the Europa League in Nicosia 1:3 with Apollon Limassol and after the 1:2 in Vienna the team lost 2:5. The Cypriots have to deal with PSV Eindhoven or Haugesund in play-off.

Maudo Jarjue brought the visitors into the lead in the 18th minute, but a very controversial penalty kick (45.+2) converted by Serge Gakpe was the beginning of the end of the Viennese. This was followed by an own goal from European Cup debutant Johannes Handl (55th) and a goal from Yannis Gianniotas (67th). After winning ten knockout duels in the qualifying round for the Champions League and Europa League in a row, Austria lost out again for the first time.
