After his return to Juventus, Gianluigi Buffon wants to do without the captain’s office and the prestigious back number one. He announced this at a Bianconeri event in Milan.
The 41-year-old had already talked to captain Giorgio Chiellini and regular Wojciech Szczesny. “I thank Chiellini and Szczesny who spoke to me in the last few days and offered me the number one jersey and the captain’s armband,” says Buffon.
However, the 2006 World Champion had declined with gratitude. He said: “It’s only fair that the regular goalkeeper keeps the number one and that Giorgio, who is like a brother to me, remains the captain.”
The new shirt number of Buffon is probably already fixed. “I’ve been thinking about the 77 that’s part of my story. It’s the number I played a sensational season with at Parma and then got the chance to come to Juventus,” Gigi said.
After only a year at PSG, Buffon returned to Juventus on Thursday and enters his 18th season with the Northern Italians. The goalkeeper had switched from AC Parma to Juventus in 2001 for the equivalent of 53 million euros.
