Juventus Turin must continue to wait for the first victory after the early win of the eighth consecutive Scudetto. One week after the 1-1 draw at Inter Milan, the record champions in the Derby della Mole also had to settle for a 1-1 (0-1) win over city rivals FC Turin.
Without international Emre Can, who was absent due to muscular problems, Juve fell behind Sasa Lukic in the 18th minute. Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (84.) prevented the derby defeat by head shortly before the end.
FC Turin missed out on climbing to fourth place, at least temporarily, to qualify for the Champions League. Turin are now sixth with 57 points, Atalanta Bergamo (59 points) and AS Rome (58 points) will be able to take the lead this weekend.
The draw against the city rivals is nevertheless a success for Torino – especially in view of the upcoming celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the catastrophe of Superga. On 4 May 1949, a Fiat G-212 propeller engine collided with the Superga, a 675-metre-high mountain just outside Turin’s city gates.
All 31 inmates lost their lives, including almost all players and officials of FC Turin, which at the time was the measure of all things in Italian football and won the championship four times in a row. Every year, Turin hosts commemorative events to commemorate the tragic accident at the summit of Superga, in which the FC Turin team will also take part.
