Balloon D’Or Debate? CR7 is silent

Cristiano Ronaldo did not want to comment on the Ballon d’Or following Portugal’s 1-0 win over the Netherlands in the Nations League. “No, I’m not talking about the Ballon d’Or,” he replied to questions.

“My goal in this game was to win and play well,” added Ronaldo, who celebrated the Serie A title with Juventus Turin last season.

The Portuguese may have improved his chances of winning the Nations-League title, but the competition is fierce.

FC Barcelona’s long-time rival Lionel Messi regained his former strength in an outstanding season and, despite a disappointing end to the season, is considered the favourite for the golden ball. Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, central to the Reds’ victory in the Champions League and part of the strengthened Dutch national team, is also a candidate.
