Head coach Zinedine Zidane has confirmed central defender Raphael Varane’s place at Real Madrid beyond the summer.
“The positive thing about this season’s final is that Varane will stay,” said Zidane after the defeat at Rayo Vallecano (0-1).
After eight seasons at the Bernabeu, Varane had recently been accused of intending to change and there were rumours that Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus Turin had an interest in the world champion.
In 2011, Varane moved from RC Lens to the Spanish capital for ten million euros to become one of the best defenders in the world. The 26-year-old’s contract runs until 2022.
Real Madrid will be undergoing a personnel change this summer, with Zidane’s return to the coaching post in March continuing to cause them to stumble through the season. On Sunday, the royals showed an extremely weak performance against relegation candidate Rayo Vallecano.
