Real Madrid’s midfielder Martin Ödegaard has explained his decision to loan to LaLiga rivals Real Sociedad. The Norwegian will be playing for the Basques on loan in the coming season and has thus decided against several Champions League clubs, including the Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

In an interview with the Marca, Ödegaard revealed: “I won’t give the names of the clubs, but I had options to play for clubs that are in the Champions League and the Europa League”. However, the package as a whole spoke in favour of Real Sociedad.

“For me, the most important thing was to get along well in my new team, with the coach, with the project and that’s why I decided to come here,” the 20-year-old continued. Real Madrid also gave him a free choice when he made the move.

The club from San Sebastian is for Ödegaard nevertheless only a transit station to a higher goal. “My goal is to play for Real Madrid one day. But now I think the best step for me is to go to Real Sociedad. I want to do my best. After that you will see further”, explained the left foot.

In addition to Real Sociedad, Bayer Leverkusen and Ajax are also said to have been on Ödegaard’s side. In the Werkself, the offensive player should have replaced Julian Brandt, who had moved to BVB. After the cancellation of the 18-time Norwegian national player, Nadiem Amiri from TSG Hoffenheim moved into the focus of the Leverkusen team.

In 2015, Ödegaard moved from Stromsgodset to the Royals at the age of 16 for 2.8 million euros. After the Scandinavian was used first for the second team of the Madrilenen, followed two guest appearances in the Netherlands.

In the past season, Ödegaard scored 23 goals in 39 games for Vitesse Arnhem. At Real Sociedad, the winger now wants to recommend himself for a regular place at Real Madrid.
