Iker Casillas wants to become association president

Goalkeeper icon Iker Casillas applies for the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation RFEF.

“Yes, I will run for president,” the 38-year-old announced on Monday on Twitter, confirming media reports of the past few days. The former world and European champion had been toying with the idea of looking for another field of activity for some time after his heart attack last year.

Casillas has to compete against Luis Rubiales, who has been RFEF president since 2018 and is standing for re-election. After the suspension of long-time association boss Angel Maria Villar on charges of corruption, Rubiales won a run-off vote against interim president Juan Luis Larrea.
