Ex-BVB talent as Busquets-successor?

Published on

FC Barcelona is apparently interested in ex-BVB talent Mikel Merino. Real Sociedad’s midfielder could be set up as the successor to Sergio Busquets, according to a media report.

As the Catalan SPORT reports, FC Barcelona observes the development of Merino. The midfielder, who switched from CA Osasuna to BVB in 2016, never made it to Dortmund, but found his way to Real Sociedad.

In the north of Spain, Merino have stabilised their performances and were important regulars at La Real last season. Despite a contract until 2023, it could change at any time without the club’s consent due to a 50 million euro exit clause.

In Merino Barcelona should see a suitable replacement for the aging busquets. The 30-year-old joined the first team in 2008 and has shaped the team’s midfield ever since. At last, however, he was no longer uncontroversial. His contract also runs until 2023.

The alternative to Merino is also called Busquets. Oriol Busquets, not related to the current Barca professional, is currently playing in the second team of FC Barcelona. The 20-year-old is also at home in the defensive midfield and was already in the Copa del Rey last season.
