Because of Griezmann: Atletico announces Barca

Published on

Atletico Madrid have reported FC Barcelona to LaLiga because of differences of opinion over the paid withdrawal clause in the transfer of striker star Antoine Griezmann. The case is due to be heard next Thursday.

Last week Barca had transferred 120 million euros to Atletico for Griezmann, whose exit clause was lowered to this amount on 1 July. However, the Colchoneros insist on the previously valid withdrawal clause of 200 million euros, as the Catalans and Griezmann had already agreed on a transfer in March according to Atleti and the Frenchman himself had already informed those responsible of his wish to change in mid-May.

An uncomplicated solution for the case is not to be expected. The six-strong LaLiga committee includes both a representative of Barca and one of Atletico. Since this is a clear conflict of interest, both could even be forced to resign from their posts.

Griezmann, who switched from Real Sociedad to Atletico in 2014, signed a five-year contract with Barca until 2024.
