Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu jokingly revealed that the club plans to erect ten monuments to its superstar Lionel Messi in front of the renovated Camp Nou stadium, which is due to reopen in 2023.
When asked whether Messi would receive a statue in front of the arena next to club legend Ladislao Kubala, Bartomeu replied to the Observer: “There will be ten for him! The president once again emphasized the uniqueness of the Argentinian: “There are great players, but he’s on a different level.”
Messi played a big part again this season in Barcelona winning the title in LaLiga and is well on the way to reaching the final of the Champions League. “I wouldn’t give him the Balloon d’Or at all. He’s got that behind him: he’s now in a category of his own,” enthused Bartomeu.
Messi has scored 34 goals for the Catalans in 32 league games this season and has prepared 15 more. In the Champions League he scores 15 scorer points in nine games (12 goals, three assists).
