Sergio Agüero has dissociated himself from a statement that neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo are deserved winners of the Ballon d’Or. “I think a player from the final of the Champions League should win the title,” the Argentinian had previously been quoted in various media.
On Tuesday, Agüero’s answer followed on Twitter: “I don’t like to explain things in this way, but if words are attributed to me that I didn’t say, I have to do it,” wrote Leo Messi’s good friend: “I wouldn’t give the title to anyone but Lionel Messi, especially as long as he plays like this season,” he clarified.
Last year the award had already gone neither to Messi nor to Cristiano Ronaldo. Luka Modric, who won the Champions League with Real Madrid and reached the World Cup final with Croatia, received the Golden Ball instead.
Agüero also played an impressive season this year. With 32 goals across the competition, he helped Manchester City snatch the Premier League title from Liverpool FC under their noses. The Skyblues could still win a national triple this season if they win the FA Cup final against FC Watford (Saturday, 6pm live on DAZN).
