Ilkay Gündogan of Manchester City says he knows nothing about a possible return to Borussia Dortmund. The midfielder denied corresponding rumours after the international match of the German national team against Estonia (8:0) on Tuesday evening.
“I’d know about that. I don’t know anything, I didn’t talk to anyone,” the 28-year-old replied to a question from a reporter in the Mixed Zone. In Manchester, Gündogan is still under contract until 2020, so he could switch to Gündogan at the end of the coming season without a replacement.
But that is not the current plan of the national player: “There will be talks in the summer and then we will see further. I’m not dissatisfied with Manchester City, so I wouldn’t say I want to leave. The club wants to extend.”
The rumours about a return to Borussia Dortmund had recently come up again and again. Among other things, the English daily newspaper The Sun reported on a possible reunification. From 2011 to 2016, Gündogan played in Dortmund before leaving the club for 27 million euros in the direction of Manchester.
There he completed 50 races last season and was one of the top performers under Pep Guardiola. “We want him to renew the contract immediately. Yesterday would have been better than today and today better than tomorrow,” said the Catalan coach last.
According to information from SOCCERSCORE and Goal, the talks had been stopped by Gündogan in the spring. However, he never ruled out staying beyond 2020.
