Manchester City was long time on course for the Quadruple – winning all four possible titles in one season. In the Champions League, however, the Citizens are now out and in the league the Skyblues are also competing head-to-head with FC Liverpool. Here you get an overview of the remaining program of the Guardiola troupe.
Pep Guardiola remains convinced of his team, despite his elimination in the Champions League quarter-finals against Tottenham Hotspur. Every day he sees what his team has achieved in the last two seasons and still does.
Guardiola is particularly proud of the consistency of his team’s performance: “I’m sorry, but I love my team”. Whether his team will give him a title or two in return for his love remains to be seen. In both the Premier League and the FA Cup, City can crown a season that has been outstanding up to this point – or almost everything can be gambled away.
With the outstanding title run last season, Manchester City have set the bar high for their performance. In the current season, however, the citizens confirm the impression that they are now a real power and are heading for a similarly successful season.
In the Premier League, however, City have a real challenger in FC Liverpool, unlike last year, and are fighting at eye level for the Premier League title. In the second half of the season, the Skyblues have achieved the highest points score of all Premier League teams with 42 points to date, and in the fight for the championship they have everything in their own hands. However, the Guardiola troops must not afford a slip.
After winning the League Cup against Chelsea at the beginning of the year, Pep Guardiola’s team can look forward to their second cup victory of the season. In early April, Skyblues beat Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup semi-final and are now in the final against FC Watford. Only one more advance in the UEFA Champions League was once again denied ManCity.
The remaining Manchester City season programme still includes a total of five compulsory matches. These include four Premier League matches and the FA Cup final. All in all, the Citizens will play three more away from home, once on neutral ground and once in front of home spectators at Etihad Stadium.
The decisive advantage in the fight for the championship for the Citizens could ironically be their elimination from the Champions League. While the Citizens have no additional burdens from semi-finals in the premier class, FC Liverpool have two heavy games against FC Barcelona in front of their chests.
The FA Cup final on 18 May could ideally only be an addition to an already successful 2018/19 city season. With Pep Guardiola’s side beating first division rivals in round four, the quarter-finals and semi-finals, the Citizens will face FC Watford, another first division team.
Next Wednesday the Skyblues will have to play against their city rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are probably the biggest stumbling block on the way to defending their title. The upcoming opponents for Manchester City at a glance:
