Divock Origi scored in the 86th minute on Saturday evening in Newcastle to secure Liverpool FC three important points in the Premier League title race. After 3-2, the striker dedicated the victory to his injured teammate Mohamed Salah.
“It wasn’t easy, but in the end we showed our fighting spirit and took the three points with us,” Origi said after the match at Sky Sports. He stressed, “We felt we had to do it for Salah.”
26-year-old Salah had been carried off the pitch with a head injury following a collision with Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp was able to give the all-clear after the match.
The 3-2 win over Newcastle was Origi’s second major goal of the season after a 1-0 win over Everton FC in the 96th minute. “I just tried to do everything I could,” the Belgian attacker was unimpressed.
In the table, Liverpool are only two points ahead of Manchester City (92), who can pass again with a win against Leicester on Monday. “There are a lot of emotions associated with it, but we have to control them,” Origi warned.
He added, “It’s very exciting. It’s a special season, but we want to finish it in good style. Let’s hope it develops in our favor.”
