Midfield star Christian Eriksen of the Champions League finalist Tottenham Hotspur has fired the speculation about his person and for the first time clearly positioned himself with regard to his future.
When he arrived at the Danish national team’s quarters on Wednesday, Eriksen said to Ekstrabladet: “I have the feeling that I have reached a point in my career where I might like to try something new”.
Eriksen’s been associated with other clubs for months. Especially the Spanish record champion Real Madrid is regarded as interested, also FC Bayern was mentioned. The contract of the game designer in London runs until 2020, so far the Spurs have not succeeded in extending this working paper.
Eriksen then became relatively clear when it came to his ideas for this summer. He feels the “deepest respect” for Tottenham, but: “I have said that I want to try something new and I hope there will be clarity this summer. That’s my plan. In football you never know when there is clarity, it can happen at any time. Hopefully as soon as possible.”
No interested club has yet contacted Tottenham boss Daniel Levy, said the 27-year-old. He stressed that he would leave the Spurs only for a club that meant “a step forward”.
Asked about Real Madrid he said: “That would be a step forward. But Real would have to report to Tottenham and as far as I know that hasn’t happened yet.”
Eriksen changed from Ajax Amsterdam to the top English club in 2013 for 13.5 million euros. He left a back door open for a stay on the Thames: “It’s difficult, I have to look at the possibilities. If nothing exciting happens, why shouldn’t I stay? Whether or not I renew depends on the terms.”
