I’m not an idiot: Mourinho knows Eriksen’s future

When does Christian Eriksen leave Tottenham? José Mourinho is also tired of this constant topic. After all, he will soon be able to look forward to a new member.

José Mourinho calls the coach and president of Benfica Lisbon “my friends”, which is why the coach of the Tottenham Hotspur denied any comment on his compatriot Gedson Fernandes on Monday. But in the meantime it’s pretty clear: The Portuguese international (two internationals) will be the first winter newcomer of the Spurs.

Gedson is to be loaned out until 2021 – and relieve Mourinho
The one-and-a-half-year loan deal with Benfica is due to be announced shortly, and the 21-year-old central midfielder, who just a few days ago seemed on the verge of joining West Ham United, will be relieving his compatriot Mourinho: The latter complained about his limited rotation options prior to the FA Cup replay against second-league club Middlesbrough on Tuesday (9.05 pm, LIVE! at kicker and in stream at DAZN).

Liverpool had been able to swap ten players for their FA Cup match. “I can tell you that Alderweireld will be the only player who will not be in the squad (from the professionals, the editor),” said Mourinho. In addition to the long-term injured Hugo Lloris, Ben Davies, Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko, he has also recently missed Tanguy Ndombelé.

The best Eriksen? Mourinho: “I must be honest and say no”
All this also means that Christian Eriksen has always been set in the past few weeks, even though he has basically finished with the spurs. The 27-year-old Dane had announced his wish to change clubs immediately before the season, but was unable to find a suitable club; now he is in talks with Inter Milan, although a transfer without a replacement does not appear possible until summer.

Mourinho also knows that this is not a happy situation – against Liverpool (0-1), Eriksen, who has been with the club since 2013, was booed after a poor showing at his replacement. “If you ask me if I think this is the best Christian Eriksen has ever been, I have to be honest and say no,” Mourinho said on Monday. “If you ask me if I know why: I am not an idiot.”

The fans booed Eriksen against Liverpool – Mourinho didn’t like him either
He did not blame Eriksen for saying that it was simply normal not to play at the highest level under these circumstances. He also said he had performed well in the last few weeks, but: “I also think what you probably thought during the game and what the fans probably thought. He didn’t play a very good game against Liverpool, I have to agree with that.”

And yet “he’s playing tomorrow,” as Mourinho revealed, “and maybe he’ll play again on Saturday (in Watford, the editor). He obviously does not expect a quick solution, even though when asked if he knew what Eriksen was going to do, he answered: “Yes, I do.” He did not want to go into more detail.
