Werner: Leipzig wants to start new attempt

RB Leipzig has not yet given up hope for a contract extension with Timo Werner.

“Timo, through his consultant, tended to signal to us that they didn’t want to extend the contract, although that was a few weeks ago again. In the meantime, we have qualified for the Champions League and played a great second half of the season,” Managing Director Oliver Mintzlaff told Sport1.

The 43-year-old sees the fact that the Leipzigers have succeeded in engaging Julian Nagelsmann as coach as a plus point in the Werner theme.

“The team has continued to grow together and I believe that with Julian Nagelsmann we will get someone who brings a breath of fresh air. In the combination Rangnick-Nagelsmann we have a sporty team, what other Bundesliga clubs would wish for. The last word has certainly not yet been spoken, but there is no foreseeable tendency,” says Mintzlaff.

Werner’s contract with RB runs until 2020 and the offensive player will be on the wish list of FC Bayern, among others. He is also associated with various English clubs and with Atletico Madrid.

“We have always said that we want to bind Timo Werner to us in the long term, but at the same time we have said that we cannot go into a final contract year without clarification. We are a young club and cannot afford to lose a young national player without a replacement,” said Mintzlaff, who announced further talks after the DFB Cup final.
