Watzke: Earlier transfers than Bavaria? “There was no alternative.”

Before the Supercup duel with FC Bayern Munich (live on DAZN) Hans-Joachim Watzke explained the early transfers from Borussia Dortmund this summer. He also commented on the leading players at BVB and on the courageous objectives for this season.

“We have to make the transfers early because we can spend less money than the Bavarians,” said the DAZN board boss with a view to the sluggish transfer activities of the Munich-based DAZN: “These transfers, which we made at such an early stage, would certainly have been more expensive now. There was no alternative.”

Among others, the Dortmund team have signed Julian Brandt of Bayer Leverkusen and Thorgan Hazard of Borussia Mönchengladbach for the new season. Later, the transfer of Mats Hummel’s returnee was added. “Michael Zorc did a great job. We are very satisfied with the purchases”, Watzke praised his sports director.

With Hummels, “more quality has been achieved in the defence and with Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt more offensive possibilities”. In addition, the mental stability in the team is now greater, says Watzke.

“It is clear that Marco is glad that Mats supports him there. We also have Axel Witsel. These are players who can lead a team,” he said, adding: “Nico Schulz and Julian Brandt are international players, not classic junior players. So we don’t have that many players to lead. The experience of Mats combined with the personality of Marco and Axel, that’s good.”

Thanks to these circumstances and with the experience of the only just missed championship in the past season, we have to set ourselves “big goals” in Dortmund, Watzke made it clear once again: “We did that and that’s right”.
