Surprise: Demichelis takes over Bavaria’s U19

Published on

Martin Demichelis returns surprisingly to Bayern Munich and takes over the U19 of the German record champion as coach. The club announced that on Thursday. Miroslav Klose, whom the Bavarians had actually wanted to promote to the vacant position, may therefore remain with “his” U17.

Demichelis, who wore the Bayern jersey from 2003 to winter 2010, does not have much experience in coaching. In the 2017/18 season, the 38-year-old was an assistant to FC Malaga, the then Spanish first division team. He succeeds Sebastian Hoeneß, who took over the second team from Holger Seitz after his move to the sports management of the junior performance centre.

As assistants Demichelis uses the former U16 coaches Danny Schwarz and Stefan Buck. “He is proud to return to his heart club and will strengthen our academy with his quality and international experience,” Salihamidzic said about his former teammate Demichelis.

With Klose (41), he had “once again discussed what is best for FC Bayern,” added the sports director. Thereupon he had fulfilled his wish to be allowed to stay another year with the U17. “We all really appreciate Miro’s work as a coach,” Salihamidzic said. In the first year Klose and his team had failed in the semi-final of the German championship at the later champion 1. FC Cologne.
