Bundesliga: Serge Gnabry creates rare piece of art

Serge Gnabry of Bayern Munich has scored a 1-1 (0-0) final goal in the derby at 1 FC Nuremberg, a rare feat. The 23-year-old is only the third professional in Bundesliga history to have scored double-digit goals for three different clubs in three consecutive years.

Previously only Erwin Kostedde (1974-77/Offenbach, Hertha, Dortmund) and Jürgen Wegmann (1985-88/Dortmund, Schalke, Bavaria) had succeeded in this. Gnabry was successful ten times for TSG Hoffenheim last season and eleven times for Werder Bremen the year before. The goal against the club was his tenth for the Bavarians.

President Uli Hoeneß therefore already sees Gnabry as player of the year for the record champion. “We thought, well, let’s get him back now and then see if he plays now and then,” Hoeneß told the kicker: “Now he’s a regular, he’s a lot of fun and he’s the biggest surprise of the season, in a positive way.”

Gnabry had moved from Hoffenheim to Munich last summer after one year on loan. The national player (contract until 2023) has scored 13 goals and prepared nine in 38 competitive matches to date.

“I don’t see any limit with him,” said Horst Hrubesch, the DFB junior coach of many years, to the kicker: “If he stays healthy, Bavaria will have a lot of fun with him, 15 to 20 goals per season are possible”. Under Hrubesch, Gnabry had won Olympic silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
