Matthias Sammer ends his engagement as an expert at Eurosport. “I have made the decision for myself personally and for my family to take a somewhat shorter career step in the future,” the 1996 European Football Champion announced on Friday.
“For this reason I will not continue my expert work at Eurosport in the coming season. This decision was anything but easy for me,” added Sammer.
Sammers step does not take place for health reasons, as the 51-year-old had the SID informed him from his holiday. The effort for his expert job had simply become too much for him. Sammer was active for the station about 250 days a year with the preparation and follow-up of his appearances.
Instead, he now wants to enjoy his freedom – even on Mallorca, where he bought an apartment. Sammer plans to spend several months a year on the island with his family. But Munich remains the centre of life.
Sammer, who is an external consultant for Borussia Dortmund, had been accompanying the Bundesliga broadcasts for the station for two years. “It was fantastic to see the intensity and enthusiasm with which he developed our idea of football analysis and the perfectionism with which he prepared himself for his broadcasts. It is a pity that we are losing him,” said Gernot Bauer, Head of Sports at Eurosport in Germany.
