Sabitzer criticizes Leipzig’s transfer policy

Marcel Sabitzer has again asked RB Leipzig to rethink its transfer policy. “If you want to get to the top or even win a trophy, it’s helpful to get some experienced players on board,” the midfielder told the German trade magazine kicker (Thursday).

He continued to stand by his opinion that the Bundesliga team should not only attract young players. Until now, the Leipzig guideline was to obligate players under the age of 24 as a rule. This summer Ademola Lookman (21), Christopher Nkunku (21), Hannes Wolf (20) from Salzburg, Luan Candido (18) and Ethan Ampadu (18) came to RB. Only the new substitutekeeper Philipp Tschauner is already 33 years old.

Last season Leipzig qualified as third in the Bundesliga for the Champions League, but clearly lost the DFB Cup final against FC Bayern. Under the new coach Julian Nagelsmann, the preparation for the new season has so far been mixed. “Maybe it will take a little longer for everything to work optimally, so you have to stay calm now,” said Sabitzer.

In addition, the 25-year-old underscored the high ambitions of the Saxons. “Our goal must be to qualify for the Champions League every season,” he said. The squad for the coming season is the best since it has been under contract in Leipzig. “As for the quality of the course, at any rate. But I think in my first two years, the team spirit has helped us a lot outside the court that we were so strong,” Sabitzer said.

Before the first compulsory match in the DFB Cup on Sunday, the team still lacked the “nippiness” of the second division team VfL Osnabrück, Sabitzer stressed, but added optimistically: “We’ll get it this week.
