Borussia Dortmund has cleared the stumbling block SC Freiburg without any problems and kept the title fight in the Bundesliga exciting. The mercilessly effective BVB won 4:0 (1:0) at the Sport-Club on the 30th matchday and reduced the gap to Bayern Munich to one point. The record champion had presented against Bremen on Saturday – and failed in Freiburg at the end of March (1:1).
Jadon Sancho (12th) shot the by no means masterly, but ripped off guests six days before the derby against archrival Schalke 04 in the lead.
In front of 24,000 spectators in the sold-out Black Forest stadium, the last weak captain Marco Reus (54th) increased before Mario Götze (79th) and Paco Alcacer (87th, penalty kick).
Despite the pressure, the Westphalians were able to travel to the Breisgau with a positive feeling – after all, Freiburg have never had such a bad home record against any team as against Borussia.
The guests, where the last injured Raphael Guerreiro returned to the starting eleven and Christian Pulisic at least to the squad, needed some start-up time for their first and for a long time only successful action.
After this had happened, however, it was possible to cheer directly: A highly respectable combination, in which Guerreiro, Reus and Götze were all involved, left Sancho empty-handed. Reus also tested with a rich long-range shot (19.) SC goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow.
The early goal then gradually sparked the enthusiasm of the black-yellow side, who were to be defensively more stable for the much longed-for first championship in seven years.
The goal of former Freiburg goalkeeper Roman Bürki was in trouble several times after just under half an hour, and the most dangerous attempt by Luca Waldschmidt (26) was brilliantly parried by the Swiss goalkeeper.
After plenty of idle time until the change of sides, the hosts were the greedy team in the first minutes of the second run.
For the compensation, however, there was a lack of cold-bloodedness, which showed on the other side of the BVB. Once again, a brilliant pass into the depths was enough to bypass Freiburg’s entire defensive line – Reus scored the flattering 2:0 in the long corner.
Afterwards, the Freiburgers launched only a few attacks in front of national coach Joachim Löw’s eyes because Dortmund either combined the ball through their own ranks or, with the opposing team in possession of the ball in front of their own penalty area, extremely narrowed the space with two chains of four.
Waldschmidt (71.) nevertheless came to a conclusion before Götze made everything clear for the guests based on the preliminary work of the strong Reus. Alcacer scored his 17th goal of the season from the point. Pascal Stenzel had caused the penalty kick.
