Metzelder probably in the race again

Bundesliga: S04: Metzelder probably in the race again

Christoph Metzelder is apparently again an option for the vacant sports director position on Schalke. There is probably competition for Michael Reschke as a squad planner. Interim coach Huub Stevens reviews his last term as Schalke trainer. Here you can find all news and rumours about S04.

Sports director Jochen Schneider still has two posts to fill on Schalke. On 30 June, he wants to introduce a squad planner and a sports director alongside new trainer David Wagner, preferably some time before that.

Markus Krösche from SC Paderborn was for a long time the favourite for the position of Sports Director. However, the two parties did not appear to have met. According to kicker, the different salary expectations played an important role.

Horst Heldt, who had already worked as a manager for Schalke between 2011 and 2016, returned to the spotlight. However, the football magazine reports that Schalke would prefer Christoph Metzelder as a charismatic, eloquent head. Heldt, on the other hand, would not seriously consider the club.

Metzelder was already in conversation with Krösche at Schalke before the talks. According to kicker, the protests of the fans would not prevent the Schalk leadership from cooperating with the former BVB and Schalke professional.

The position of Technical Director, who is responsible for management planning, already seemed to be filled by Michael Reschke. The former sports director of VfB Stuttgart terminated his contract with VfB at the beginning of the week and would be available.

In Schneider, Reschke has a strong supporter. The S04 sports director appreciates Reschke above all for his work as a squad planner at FC Bayern and in Leverkusen. According to kicker there is however much headwind in the Schalker executive floor. Reschke had left too much scorched earth to the skeptics in Stuttgart.

According to the report, there is therefore a competitor for the 61-year-old. However, the magazine does not mention a name.

In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten, Schalke’s interim coach Huub Stevens reviewed his probably last term as Schalke trainer. According to Stevens, the fact that he even returned from retirement was also due to the lack of backing for former coach Domenico Tedesco.

“As a young coach like Domenico Tedesco, you need support in a situation like this. Just as I experienced it through Rudi Assauer in an exemplary way. Domenico obviously didn’t get this support. A lot of things went wrong and that has to be worked through,” said Stevens.

The task of maintaining his class was one of the hardest for Stevens in his entire coaching career. “The spiral had already screwed itself relatively far down. Our sports director Jochen Schneider told me: ‘Huub, this team is dead!’ How could they have self-confidence? 0:3 in Mainz, 0:4 against Düsseldorf, 0:7 in Manchester – every team in the world would be totally insecure after such a series,” Stevens explained.

He didn’t change much about the tactics of the team. He was more interested in bringing together the heart of a fighter and fun. Without “a little looseness” it won’t work.

The highlight of his “hopefully” last term in office at FC Schalke was the 4:2 victory in the district derby against the BVB. After the victory he celebrated together with Gerald Asamoah in a regular fan pub with some fans and was criticized thereupon.

The messed-up season wouldn’t have justified that, they said. Stevens replied, “So what? Let them shake their heads. Just do something crazy – that’s Schalke, too. That is also what makes this club so special and endearing. ”
