Löw: Sane to the FCB? “Good for him and for us”

For national coach Joachim Löw, a change from national team player Leroy Sane to FC Bayern Munich is by no means an illusion. If a transfer were to take place, it would be “a good story for Sane and for us,” said Löw at an event of the Bild newspaper on Friday in Berlin.

“Bavaria Munich is always a good address, he knows Germany and feels at home there. If that works out here in Germany, it would certainly not be any worse for him”, Löw explained his opinion.

Löw also emphasized, however, that Sane had not yet talked to him about the concrete interest of the Bavarians. The 59-year-old also pointed out that Sane had “always felt very comfortable” with Manchester City, even though he had “not played too much from the beginning this year”.

Löw announced a conversation with his offensive player about his future in preparation for the European Championship qualifiers on 8 June in Belarus and three days later in Mainz against Estonia. “I have to talk to him next week,” Löw said.

Sane now plays an important role in the national team under Löw. In the run-up to the 2018 World Cup, the national coach was sharply criticised for removing Sane (then Best Young Premier League Player) from the squad for the final round in Russia. However, Löw denied whether he would also take a critical view of his decision afterwards.

“I spoke to Leroy just before the final nomination. We’ve made some arrangements. I wasn’t fully convinced of him during the preparation, a Julian Brandt, for example, did a great job,” explained the national coach: “If I could change one thing, I would have adjusted the team in front of Mexico differently.

The historic World Cup finish in the preliminary round had left a “total void” in Löw. “I’ve been in a bad way since the World Cup, too. You can’t even describe what’s happening with words,” said Löw, speaking of “three or four days of rigor mortis”. After the World Cup blasphemy and the relegation from the first division of the Nations League, Löw is currently undergoing a radical change in the DFB team.

In the end the world champions Thomas Müller, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng fell victim to this. In a personal meeting at the beginning of March, Löw had told the three Bayern professionals that he would no longer nominate them for the national team in the future. Above all, the way Löw bid farewell to the world champion trio caused a sensation and critical voices.

But Löw didn’t show any remorse on Friday. “I would do it that way again”, the national coach made clear: “I wanted to tell the players personally. There was no way I wanted them to hear about it from the media. I spoke to the players on the phone shortly after. It was important to all of us that our good relationship remain.”
