Lahm to Kovac: “Typical Bavarian Discussion”

The fight for the German championship between record champion Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund has been decided for long-time national team captain Philipp Lahm.

“Bavaria will not let the championship be taken away and will take the bowl, that’s through,” the 2014 World Champion told Sport Bild.

The Munich team has a four-point advantage over the Dortmund challenger before the last two matchdays. With a victory at the third place and cup final opponent RB Leipzig on Saturday (15.30 o’clock in the LIVETICKER) the title win would be perfect for the Bavarians.

For Lahm, the fact that the future of coach Niko Kovac in Munich seems uncertain despite the chance of winning the double is “a typical FC Bayern discussion. The team will become champions, are in the cup final, but the club has been eliminated in the eighth-finals of the Champions League – that hasn’t happened since 2011.”

Lahm takes a critical view of the national dominance of Bavaria. “We need to discuss more about the future of football. The Bundesliga definitely needs more competition, because although FC Bayern have weakened this season, other clubs have not used this opportunity to become champions,” he said.

In Germany only one club belongs to the top brands of international football: FC Bayern. “In German football, we have to be clear about whether we like it – and what decisions have to be made if we don’t like it,” he said.
