Heidel: Tönnies? “Completely over the facts”

Christian Heidel (56) defended himself against the subsequent negative assessment of his work as sports director of FC Schalke 04 and addressed clear words to the head of the supervisory board, Clemens Tönnies.

Tönnies’ criticism was “completely over the facts”, said Heidel, who resigned from the royal blue in February, during the ARD sports show.

Last summer, everyone was still responsible for Schalke finishing second. Eight months later and after a bad season, “only one person is to blame”, complained the long-time success manager from Mainz, Heidel.

Schalke had fought against relegation for a long time in the past season and only finished the season in 14th place. After the rescue, Schalke supervisory board boss Tönnies accused Heidel of having “left Domenico Tedesco, who was dismissed in March, a bit alone” by his withdrawal.

Tönnies said about the composition of Heidel’s squad: “What Christian put together there just didn’t fit.”
