Bundesliga: Hecking: "Must position us stronger"

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s former head coach Dieter Hecking has underlined his criticism of his dealings with the coaches in the Bundesliga. At the same time, in an interview with the trade magazine kicker, the 54-year-old demands more commitment from his colleagues for a more appropriate appreciation.

“We coaches are not in the victim role. We all know what happens if we don’t succeed. Nevertheless, I think we need to position ourselves more strongly,” said Hecking.

The patience of the clubs with the coaches has become less and less from the point of view of the ex-professional. “In the old days they used to stuff a hole in a sock, now they throw the sock away and buy a new pair. Many are no longer willing to go through a crisis together and emerge stronger.”

Hecking will be replaced by Marco Rose at Borussia despite the entry into the Europa League and a longer contract for the new season. Hecking considers his successor, who was engaged by the Austrian champion RB Salzburg, “a very good solution for Borussia. Marco fits Gladbach. He comes with a down-to-earth attitude that Borussia also stands for.”

The decision of his previous club to split up at the end of the season is still a bitter one for Hecking, even about two months later. Although he “only spoke of a disappointment and no longer of a giant disappointment”, Hecking only declared this to be a new impulse at the time of the decision, which was completely unexpected at the time, and not with the justification of sports boss Max Eberl.

For the time being, the coach sees his future even further on the bench and not in the role of a sports manager in the stands. Hecking did not comment further on speculations about a commitment to the second league club Hamburger SV, but at the same time confirmed his wish for a prompt return to business: “I am fit, I am motivated, I am aggressive”.
