Götze und Schürrle: World Cup heroes in a dead end

Published on

Goal scorer Mario Götze and “assistant” André Schürrle were the heroes of the World Cup triumph in Rio. Six years later their careers are stuck in a dead end. On Easter Saturday, the heroic deed of Mario Götze and Andre Schürrle flickered across the screens once again. The 113th minute of the 2014 World Cup final is underway, Schürrle crosses from the left, Götze lets the ball drip casually from his chest – and shoots the fourth star from the sky.

But only 1.67 million fans wanted to see the Rio canned food of the “ARD”. The market share of eight percent corresponds to that of the documentary “Im Reich der Wolga” on Monday evening (10:00 p.m.) – Götze and Schürrle have long since ceased to be ratings hits. Almost six years after their great moment in the Maracana, their career is stuck in a dead end, Borussia Dortmund has no more use for the duo.
