DFB ethics commission discusses Tönnies case

Published on

After the decision of the Honorary Council of the Bundesliga football club Schalke 04, the DFB Ethics Committee will discuss the Tönnies case on 15 August. This was confirmed on Wednesday by chairman Nikolaus Schneider at SID’s request.

However, he could not say anything about the outcome, said the 71-year-old. It is probable, however, that the decision of the Honorary Council of the Royal Blues will influence the actions of the DFB Ethics Committee. Schneider had previously told SID that ‘the Commission’s competence must also be clarified in purely formal terms’. The 15th of August as date for the meeting of the committee was again confirmed by Schneider.

On Tuesday, the S04 honorary council cleared the chairman of the supervisory board Clemens Tönnies of accusations of racism. The head of the club himself suggested that he leave his office for three months. This request of Tönnies was approved by the Schalker honorary council.

However, the DFB Ethics Committee cannot impose any sanctions. It can only initiate investigations and, in the case of sufficient suspicion, bring charges before the Ethics Chamber of the Sports Court. Schneider: “This is a purely technical process.”
