Referee Felix Zwayer has defended his decision to win the match between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 (2:4) at 1:0 for BVB on penalties for S04. Breel Embolo had shot the ball to Julian Weigl’s hand from close range in the 18th minute.
“The arm was outstretched at shoulder level and it blocked the ball. The decision was relatively easy for me to make. According to the current interpretation, it is a penalty shot,” said Zwayer, who was confirmed in his perception after studying the TV pictures, after the match.
BVB coach Lucien Favre, on the other hand, questioned the penalty decision fiercely: “This is ridiculous. This is the biggest scandal in football. They all have no idea about football,” raved the 61-year-old after the game at Sky.
In particular, the unclear interpretation has upset Favre: “Do they want the players to cut off their arms? You need your arms. That’s a shame.”
