The Austrian Damir Canadi is to lead record relegates 1. FC Nuremberg back into the Bundesliga immediately. The traditional Franconian club, which flew out of the Oberhaus for the ninth time, presented the 49-year-old as its new coach on Sunday.

Canadi, who had been in charge of the Greek first division team Atromitos Athens for the past two years, signed for two years.

He led the little Atromitos to fourth place and thus, like last year, into the Europa League. Prior to his engagement in Greece, the former midfielder had worked for Rapid Vienna in his home country. Canadi is also familiar with ascents: With the SCR Altach he won the Austrian Bundesliga in 2014 and the European Cup in third place the following year.

“We have consciously decided to make a new start in this position. Damir Canadi has proven on several occasions that he is a meticulous worker who can make players better and whose teams play attractive football,” said sports director Robert Palikuca. As co-coach Canadi brings the Dutchman Eric Orie (51) to the Noris.

The new man succeeds interim coach Boris Schommers, who inherited his former boss Michael Köllner in February. Besides Canadi, Palikuca also wants to get a technical director. The favourite is the former Munich co-trainer Peter Hermann (67).
