Bruno Labbadia gave VfL Wolfsburg the ticket for the European Cup as a farewell gift. The coach led his team on the 34th matchday of the Bundesliga to an 8-1 (3-0) gala against FC Augsburg. The wolves secured sixth place in the final account and thus their participation in the Europa League. Most recently, Lower Saxony played in the Champions League in the 2015/2016 season.
Goal scorer Wout Weghorst in a three-pack (21., 37., 55.), Robin Knoche (41.), Daniel Ginczek (57.), Elvis Rexhbecaj (60.), Josip Brekalo (85.) and Kevin Danso (89.) in an own goal in front of 24,486 spectators in the Volkswagen Arena ensured VfL’s highest Bundesliga victory. Already in the first run the wolves made everything clear, in the second run it became a bitter embarrassment for the guests, for whom Julian Schieber (82nd) scored. Never before has FCA lost so high in the Bundesliga.
Augsburg, led by former Wolfsburg coach Martin Schmidt, showed a bloodless performance without any body language and ends a season that is anything but carefree just above the relegation places.
Wolfsburg is very different. “I leave with a good feeling, also because people give me a very good feeling,” said Labbadia, who was bid farewell with thunderous applause before the final whistle. But Labbadia was not yet finished in Wolfsburg. The 53-year-old also showed that he was on his way to the best possible conclusion in the first minutes of the match against FCA.
Labbadia conducted, Labbadia corrected, Labbadia fevered. The former striker, who will be inherited by the Austrian Oliver Glasner (44) for the new season, could be satisfied with the first minutes. The landlords pushed Augsburg deeply into their own half, but first gritted their teeth out on the guests’ chain of four. Michael Gregoritsch also timidly entered the FCA offensive by long-range shot (11th).
