Official: Embolo has a new club

Borussia Mönchengladbach has finally secured the services of Swiss attacker Breel Embolo from league competitor Schalke 04. Both clubs announced this on Friday. The 22-year-old, who still had a contract with the Royal Blues until 2021, signed in Gladbach until 2023.

“He is a fast, powerful and dangerous attacker who fits very, very well into our squad,” said Sports Director Max Eberl. Already on the first matchday Embolo meets his ex-club: Schalke is the first opponent of Borussia on 17 or 18 August.

In the summer of 2016, the Swiss international had moved from FC Basel to Gelsenkirchen as a record purchase for more than 25 million euros, and Gladbach is to pay about half the price as a replacement.

Embolo had missed much of his first season on Schalke due to a serious ankle injury. Embolo had been absent for a total of 463 days due to injury.

In total, Embolo played 48 Bundesliga games for the Royal Blue and scored ten goals. In the Champions League he played 13 times (two goals). Gladbach starts on Sunday under the new coach Marco Rose into the season preparation.
