Romelu Lukaku is apparently on the verge of moving to Inter Milan for the A Series. According to the Guardian, Manchester United have accepted an improved offer from Nerazzurri for the Belgian attacker, and Lukaku will complete a medical check on Thursday.
According to the English newspaper, Inter is paying around 75 million euros for Lukaku, who is to sign a five-year contract. This makes the Belgian the most expensive newcomer in the history of the 2010 Champions League winner. Lukaku’s advisor Federico Pastorello is said to have signed the deal with the United officials in London on Wednesday.
For quite some time now, Lukakus had been looking to say goodbye to the Red Devils. The already undercooled relationship between the 26-year-old and United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reached a new low during the week.
While Lukaku trained with a youth team of his ex-club RSC Anderlecht on Tuesday, he was sentenced to two fines in the past days: On the one hand because he spread confidential sprint results from training via Twitter and on the other hand because he didn’t show up at the training ground in Carrington on Tuesday. There have also been reports that Solskjaer told Lukaku that he no longer played a role in his plans and should train in the Red Devils U23 in the future.
Italy has long been Lukakus’ declared dream destination. After the planned exchange deal between Manchester and Juventus Turin with him and Paulo Dybala burst, Inter made a new attempt. Milan coach Antonio Conte wanted to sign Lukaku as coach of Juve and Chelsea, but a cooperation never came about. A commitment to Inter also threatened to fail due to United’s high demands. According to Guardian, Inter had already failed with an offer of 70 million euros.
Just over a week ago, Inters Sports Director Giuseppe Marotta told Sky Sports: “We have made an offer for Lukaku, but Manchester United is asking a lot for him”. Lukaku moved from Everton FC to United in 2017 for almost 85 million euros and scored 42 goals for the Red Devils in 96 games.
