Spanish Federation bans the League from playing Monday games

The Spanish Football Federation RFEF has banned the league championship matches on a Monday. “We stay in our position, there are no games on Mondays,” RFEF President Luis Rubiales told via Twitter. In addition, matches may only take place on a Friday if this has been agreed with the association.

This week, the league had published its schedule for the 2019/20 season, which includes two Monday games in August alone. Rubiales had promised in March that not least because of the numerous protests against the Monday date, which were similar to those in Germany, no more matches would be scheduled for this weekday and that the point games would only take place on Saturdays and Sundays.

Rubiales accuses league boss Javier Tebas of not keeping to agreements. On 17 July, a meeting had been planned at which the federation, the league and the national sports council wanted to discuss the scheduling problems. With the presentation of the game plan, Tebas had acted autocratically, which the association would not accept.

In Germany, too, the unloved Monday Games had come under fire. At the end of November, the Bundesliga decided to abolish the season 2021/22, and there will be no more Monday matches in the 2nd Bundesliga either.
