As a rule, an original Champions League trophy consists almost entirely of silver and contains traces of gold leaf. Jürg Stadelmann was provided with 10,000 francs (today almost 9,000 euros) for the complete production.
Nevertheless, the trophy, which consists of 925 sterling silver and 24 carat gold leaf, has a material value of only about 2,000 euros.
The many hours of work, the design, the production and the symbolism make the handle pot much more valuable. An artists’ association estimated the 2014 Champions League Cup to be worth 50,000 euros.
The current trophy is 73.5 centimetres tall and weighs 7.5 kilograms. The trophy was created in 2006 and is the sixth of its kind. The cup was made by Jürg Stadelmann in Bern. According to own reports the completion took about 340 hours.
If a club has taken the pot three times in a row or five times in total, it may keep the pot. Then the calculation starts again from zero. Liverpool won the Champions League for the fifth time in 2005, which meant they had to produce a new trophy.
