Bundesliga: Werder probably sells stadium names

As one of the last clubs in the Bundesliga, Werder Bremen is apparently now selling the name of its stadium. According to unanimous media reports, the Weserstadion will be called “Wohninvest Weserstadion” as of the coming season.

A corresponding ten-year contract for 30 million euros with the real estate company “Wohninvest Holding GmbH” will be signed shortly.

Werder has been planning this controversial step for quite some time. “We have naming rights at the top of our agenda. There is the creative way with a partnership in which the name Weserstadion can be retained or the classic way to sell the right to a name to a company,” said Chairman of the Supervisory Board Marco Bode recently: “Of course, this also depends on the interests of our future partner, because he also pays money for his commitment.

The Oldenburg utility company EWE last had the name rights to the Weserstadion, but did not rename it. As the first club from the highest German league, Hamburger SV renamed the Volksparkstadion AOL-Arena in 2001.
