Bundesliga: VfB Stuttgart: Gentner receives no new contract

Bundesliga relegator VfB Stuttgart apparently plans the future without captain Christian Gentner. The 33-year-old’s contract with the Swabians, which expires at the end of June, will not be extended, as several media reported on Friday afternoon. Sports director Thomas Hitzlsperger had already informed Gentner about this decision.

Gentner comes from the VfB junior team and was part of the 2007 championship team. Two years later, he also won the Bundesliga title with VfL Wolfsburg, and in 2010, the midfielder returned to VfB. After the relegation in 2016, Gentner led the Stuttgart team back to the Upper House, but this time he no longer gets this chance.

Gentner had expressed his disapproval of the situation at the VfB even before the relegation against Union Berlin. “There are a few things that don’t suit me, that get on my nerves a little, that I would have imagined differently,” the 33-year-old had said, alluding to his unexplained future at VfB.

What happens to the veterans Andreas Beck and Dennis Aogo remains unclear. VfB’s legal defender Pascal Stenzel of SC Freiburg has signed the contract. The 23-year-old will be on loan in Stuttgart in the coming second league season, his contract in Breisgau runs until 2021.
