Bundesliga: Schalke's Matondo causes airplane scandal

Offensive talent Rabbi Matondo of FC Schalke 04 has caused a scandal on a flight from the Portuguese Faro to Bristol. That’s what the BBC and Daily Mail report.

According to the report, the 18-year-old Welsh man refused to put on his seat belt at the start. Afterwards he is said to have insulted a flight attendant several times.

Even after the Airline Manager intervened, he is said to have refused an apology, which is why he was taken away by three police officers after landing. After a brief interview at Bristol airport, Matondo was apparently allowed to continue his journey.

Schalke 04 confirmed to Sky Sport that there had been such an incident and that the club had made contact with the Welsh Federation. Matondo is currently preparing with the national team of Wales for the European Championship qualifiers against Croatia and Hungary.

A press spokesman for Schalke told the dpa: “We don’t see any need to react, as the player is also on the Welsh national team.” Matondo himself denies that there have been insults. There was no confirmation from the police either.

Last winter, Matondo switched from Manchester City to the Royal Blue for a transfer fee of nine million euros. Since then he has run seven times in the Bundesliga (one start).
